Laminitis!

denisetailby6

Charlie Brown had an acute case of Laminitis this month. He suddenly could not walk forward that morning. Our Vet, Dr. Daly came out within hours of my call. We followed her advice, and he seemed improved in 2 days.He also is positive for Lyme. It may be a long road for him, but he is happier and tolerating his new routine quite well. All pony cart rides are on hold but he gets lots of brushing time.

Finnegan has given several lessons and fun rides for children. Finn and I have explored the new trails left by the logging. Except for the flies, we had some pretty good rides. We hope to get a trail buddy to come explore the trails way out back, and I think we met someone who will come with her horse by trailer.

Bruce and I celebrated our 43rd anniversary with a dinner at the Peter Otts restaurant in Camden. I give Bruce credit, LOTS, for our long time together, and for our adventure on this farm.

The sheep have beautiful fleece, so I am planning on a fall shearing. Last year I waited until spring, but much of the fleece was matted and unusable. Our two lambs are still quite fragile. The ewe lamb was caught in the white sheep fencing, and I cut her loose as she gasped for air. She seems OK, but is on the smaller side. Our male lamb is smaller also. We moved Audrey to Fred's shed. Fred lost his mate, Coconut, this spring due to a complicated birthing, and we lost her and her 3 lambs. He loved Coconut, they were buddies and lay together under the trees in the breeze. He seems to like Audrey, and has given us lambs with Audrey that have been healthy and good fleece producers.

I have continued with the weekly spinning group called Whitefield Spinners, and we meet every Tuesday at the Sheepscott General store; 9:30 to 11:30. New persons always are welcome. I have a ton of roving from the fleece of my own sheep and fleeces from friends. My yarn is spinning more consistently.

The guests have been plentiful and fun to meet and have around. They come from all over the USA: Texas, Wisconsin, Vermont, Ohio, Massachusetts.

Jersey Mike is doing well, and likes to hang out in Finn's stall until Finn bosses him out. His main asset is that he is cute, and he is a PET.

Our Isa Brown Chicks are starting to lay beautiful copper eggs. We added 8 and they are starting to lay eggs in August right on schedule.

Sometimes I feel that this is a sureal experience on this farm. I always felt a connection to the previous influences who kept this place until we took over. Now that we are older, it is a lot of work, and we are faced with how long can we really do this with the animals. I sit in our 200 year old barn and it is always a calming place for me.

The logging is complete! New trails, and the logger has moved his skidder to his next job. Thank you, David, for the new horse trails!

Enjoy the summer.
